Wine and Food

Kyoko is 'studying' at a wine school and often indulges in fine food. So here is her VinJapan wine page. And here is her Guide to Eating Out in Tokyo.

Online Music

Recently we've got pretty interested in the fact that you can download almost any music for free from the Internet rather than forking our for it at HMV1. The format of choice these days is MP3, which is a way of compressing funky music data down into a file that is (just) small enough to download from the Internet without dying of old age inthe process. Using a modem, it takes us 10-30 minutes to download a 3- or 4-minute song, depending on the speed (or otherwise) of your connection and the site from which you're downloading.

But first you need a piece of software to play the music. The player we use is a fine program called called 'Winamp' and you can download this for free from www.winamp.com.

Next you need find some music. You can get some at www.mp3.com, but we've had trouble finding anything that we like here. Links to more desirable music can generally be found at www.mp3search.com but sadly most of them don't work, presumably because they're illegal sites that are being hounded out of existence by incensed record companies.

After all this arsing around you will have wasted hours and built up a large phone bill but still have no music to show for it so you'll probably want to vent your frustration. In this case we recommend the Alanis Morissette Random Lyric Generator. Then go to Imagine Radio, the online radio station, select some relaxing ballads, lie down and forget about fucking MP3.

Books

We love books and these days buy most of our English ones at Amazon.com.

For lots more links to book-related sites, including online libraries, dictionaries and publishers of online novels, go to our Links page.

Timo is writing a book of his own. It's subject is top secret. At the moment it's about 70% done (so that leaves only another 70% to go ;-).

Computers

Yes, we're turning into really sad spotty gits who type on our computers much more than we talk to any of our dwindling group of friends. So to relieve the bordom of long winter evenings we pinched these fun programs from the Internet.

Cars

OK, we don't actually own a car as such. But we have driven them before. For example, here's a report of a weekend in 1996 we spent driving a Caterham Seven around London and Oxfordshire.

Coming next...

Some erudite philosophical pieces by Timo:

  • Paradoxically True: What Godel's Theorem really means - and what it doesn't

  • The Doctors and the Charlatans: Postmodern philosophers' abuse of science revealed

But these aren't ready yet so you'll just have to be patient...

If you really can't wait for your next fix of postmodern philosophy, please go to the completely wonderful Postmodernism Generator.

1Before someone takes us to court or starts sending us hate-mail, of course we don't condone anyone cheating impoverished recording 'artists' out of their rightful income. Still less do we think that you should play any part to reducing the year-end bonuses of all those altruistic record company executives whose only mission in life is to bring joy to the world. So if you download any music that you really like, please go out and buy it, blah, blah, blah...
